Paul Gazolla: "shaking hands = handshake"
|
|
|
|
|
The hand and be it the action of shaking hands - the
handshake is a primary physical point of contact on
introduction to another. A symbolic representation of
verbal communication. A body articulation that is both
at once a concept and signifier of collectivity. As a
spectator of handshake we witness an agreement of
interaction. A ritual of communication. We re-live our
own physical and historical understanding of its
participation in its observation. But how much does
this individual experience explain the knowledge of
handshake?
'One can assume that all human societies share with
each other a common fund of experiences and thus of
knowledge. But they differ widely with regard to the
content and scope of their knowledge' (Norbert Elias,
The Symbol Theory)
Handshake is always becoming or transforming into a
new configuration through the point of relationship
within its environment. Since each person experiences
the handshake from a predetermined perspective within
a flux of touching and being touched. Through its
movement we transition from singular to plural.
Individual to collective. We are introduced to other
ideas. We remain individual within and become an-other
in its action.
I shake your hand. You shake my hand. I shake your
hand. You shake your hand. You shake your hand. I
shake my hand. I shake our hands. You shake our hands.
We shake our hands.
Hence there is no possibility of complete awareness of
the handshake, or the net of its meaning.

nb. There are of course different possibilities of
executing a movement or action but in shaking hands =
handshake the interest is on what the action or the
movement proposes when the performer tries to
realise/execute it in its most simplistic
characteristic. We do not have to look for the
unusual, never seen before, special, different,
spectacular or surprising ways of moving.
